Because they were word of mouth most of them...the church especially just relied on peoples honesty...alot of people couldnt read and write also.
Past records are littered with mistakes...thats not to say many millions of them are correct...sometimes they may only be a year out,like your one today?.....that can be more than enough to throw you at times.

We just have to learn to trust them.

Oh no wait a minute I just remembered I have an ancestor Elizabeth Packard who died in February 1842 in Suffolk aged 102. She is on the 1841 census in Marlesford.
