Until I consulted census records I had no knowledge whatsoever of my maternal grandfather's family. Having eventually traced an elderly relative, he was able to give me some additional details, including news of a family rift. From this I have been able to make a partial re-construction of that branch but gaps remain and a request for further information has gone unanswered.

Eveline Bessie Sanders (b Sep Q 1893 Newton Abbot) - known as Bessie - reportedly married twice, bore three children and died in 1964. Her children were known as Norman, Albert (both now deceased) and Cecil. I do not know if they were born in this order, were born to the same or different fathers or if these were the names in which their births were registered.

BMD records show a number of entries that appear to match in part but I have been unable to find a complete and coherent sequence that fully supports the information I have been given. Perhaps a fresh pair of eyes or a more creative approach is required.

I would be pleased to hear from anyone who might be able to help me make sense of all this.

Hi
I found this
Bessie Sanders married William H Shepperd - J/M 1920 Falmouth ref 5c 320.

children to Shepperd and Sanders
Muriel J/S 1920 Falmouth
Lilian G - J/S 1921 St Thomas Exeter
Albert E - J/M 1926 St Thomas
Cecil G - A/J 1923 St Thomas

If this is correct Norman may be a child of the 2nd marriage.

EDIT
There is a marriage of Bessie Shepherd to William Short - O/D 1931 Devonport ref 5b 871
and a birth of Norman J Short J/S 1935 in Surrey S.E dist to parents Short/Shepherd, but I think this is a long shot.

Hi Dave,

Thanks for your suggestions. Not too troubled by the additional girls but worried by absence of credible entry for Norman. I agree, the Norman in Surrey in 1935 is not very convincing. If nothing else Bessie would then be 42. I would also need to find a death of William H Shepperd 1926-31. Not easy-too many variants.

I thought I was on to something with Bessie E Sanders/Sydney R Beer Sep Q 1919. Norman born Mar Q 1920. Sydney Beer died Dec Q 1925. Bessie Beer/Edwin Blackmore Dec Q 1926 (all Newton Abbot) Then I hit the brickwall - no Albert or Cecil! And there is another Bessie E Sanders born Newton Abbot Mar Q 1894

Oznannie,

Eveline is shown as Evelyn R Sanders (1893), daughter of Frederick and Mary A Sanders of 8 Princes Road Ellacombe, Torquay in 1901 - sorry, don't have references.
