Does anyone have any knowledge of an old English town transcribed as 'Wigton' in Yorkshire on the 1851 and 1871 censuses?

The only Wigton I can find on Google is the one in Cumbria, which is not where my relative lived.

Hi JMR

I googled and the only Wigton seems to have been in Cumbria.

Where does the 1851 and 1861 censuses say "Wigton" as this could be a mistranscription.

Wooooooooooh:eek: Hi Jill. There is a Wighton in Norfolk about 10 miles north of Fakenham and about 20 miles west of Cromer. And Wigtown about 30 miles east of Stranraer in Scotland. And Wigston just south east of Liecester.

Oh yes, and there is a Wigton Moor near Leeds.

Any help???? Steve.:)

http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/YKS/WRY/Harewood/more.html

"WIGTON, a township, scattered houses in the parish of Harewood, upper-division of Skyrack; 3½ miles from Harewood, 5 N. of Leeds, 8 from Wetherby. Pop. [in 1822] 164."
Thanks Minden, this makes perfect sense, thanks!!! Would it be anywhere near Green Hammerton do you know?

I think my cousin and I have broken through our most stubborn "brick wall" as of yesterday, when we finally cracked it for the correct marriage certificate of our 3x Gt Grandparents. The puzzle was that Mary Ann in later censuses states she was born in Green Hammerton. In the earlier census before her marriage, the only likely entry says she was born in Wigton.

Thanks for the help everyone!!

Cheers,
Jill

"GREEN HAMMERTON, in the parish of Whixley, upper-division of Claro; 7 miles SE. of Boroughbridge and Wetherby, 8 from Knaresborough, 10 from York. Principal Inn, the George, a Posting House. Pop. 329."

"PROVIDENCE GREEN, a single house in the township of Green Hammerton, and parish of Whixley; 7 miles from Knaresborough."

Looking at Google maps, I would say they're about 8 miles apart.

Thanks so much for your help with this. I think we have found our relative after a year of searching and also uncovered the generation before at the same time. It's a nice feeling.

Cheers,
Jill
