Will of Joseph Ives. 7th July 1780. Proved.

In his will he bequeaths, all his cottages, lands and just about everything else to his eldest son Thomas Ives.

To his children, William, Joseph, James, Mary, Elizabeth and Sarah, he leaves sums of money, ranging from £250 to £500 to each of them. The only son he does not leave anything to is John Elwood Ives.

All children baptized @ Great Missenden, Bucks.

There are 3 deaths/burials for John Ives, as children or infants, July 1767(child), Feb 1770(infant) and March 1770(child again). No ages given.

No mention of a John Elwood Ives being buried or married and only his baptism in 1758. Son of Joseph & Mary(nee.Elwood).

Could I assume that John Elwood Ives has died beforehand, as he's not mentioned in the Will.

There are several possibilities.

I have a will that does not mention the eldest son but he was still alive when his father died.

The more likely reason is that John Elwood Ives had died.

The Ives mob were pretty blatant sometimes with various family members in their Wills. Even the 'blacksheep' had a mention, if not an inheritance.
If they had borrowed money in the past, it was usually deducted from their inheritance, and sometimes that was more than what they would receive. In those cases, the siblings debt would be owed to his or her brothers and sisters.

I would think James Elwood is one of those 3 children buried at Great Missenden, so he'll have to have a death date within that time span.
