Hello crankypants,

The Sydney Morning Herald - Saturday 20 April 1901
DEATHS
ALLINGHAM-March 15, 1901, at her late residence, 3 Oatley-road Paddington, Mrs. William Allingham, sen., third daughter of the late Mr. James Anderson, chief clerk in Equity, Supreme Court, aged 62 years. At rest. Interred at Waverley Cemetery. Goulburn papers please copy.

I didn't know James' occupation and I don't have his death. Now I'll look for it again BEFORE 1901.

EDIT: Found this while looking. Confirms the middle name as James.

The Sydney Morning Herald - Saturday 15 March 1902
IN MEMORIAM
ALLINGHAM - In loving memory of my dear mother, Lucy Eleanor Allingham, who departed this life March 15, 1901. Inserted by her loving son, William James. Though lost to sight, to memory dear.

Regards,

Dave

Hello crankypants,

I can't even find James ANDERSON and spouse Eleanor and the other children in the shipping records. The youngest was born in England in 1851. The three eldest arrived in 1853:

Assisted immigrants arriving in Sydney & Newcastle, 1844-59
ANDERSON Mary Jane 21 and sister Carnatic 1853 2464
ANDERSON Lucy Eleanor 19 and sister Carnatic 1853 2464
ANDERSON Sarah Anne 17 Carnatic 1853 2464
I can't find James' death between 1851 and 1901. Born abt 1804 Dublin, Ireland.

Regards,

Dave

Hello crankypants,

James was a solicitor's clerk in England. I don't know for sure spouse Eleanor came to Australia but there are these two deaths so it's possible:

Deaths:
1654/1890 ANDERSON ELLEANOR JOHN P MARY A SYDNEY
628/1900 ANDERSON ELLENOR CHARLES I ELLENOR BALMAIN NORTH

Eleanor HANLY/NANLEY b. abt 1810 Athlone, Ireland.

So far I can't find the matching newspaper notice.

Re William James, I guess the age 83 at death is an error. Everything else seems to fit. If the age is correct then I'm struggling to find another William James to fit the details.

Regards,

Dave

Hello crankypants,

Only this so far:

"...James Anderson of Sydney aforesaid Chief Clerk in the office of the Master in Equity and the Trustee appointed in the hereinafter referred to to convey the Estate and interest o fht Infant Defendants as hereinafter mentioned of the fifth part and John Roberts Junior of Paddington near Sydney aforesaid Carter of the sixth part whereas by a Decree of the Supreme Coart of New South Wales in its Equitable Jurisdiction dated the twenty third day of April one thousand eight hundred and sixty one..."

So James arrived between 1851 and 1861 and died after 1861 :)

Dave

Hi Dave

No luck yet finding his death in NLA. I keep running into this chap. Perhaps Mowbray road is throwing me off track.

1895 N.S.W Sands Directory
ANDERSON James, council clerk, Council chambers, Mowbray rd, Willoughby.

Hello crankypants,

Thanks for looking. I'm stuck too. That's not the one. There is a strong attraction in my tree to Mowbray road. Actually the John SANDS, the printers and directory maker is not related - his family is from England and mine from Scotland.

I've found the death of the spouse of three other James ANDERSONs.

Only that one ref to Supreme Court. At least we've cut the shipping search down to 1851-1861.

Regards,

Dave

Hello crankypants,

Thanks. I was going to ask about the earliest directory date. So nothing in the directory after 1858? That looks like the 1861 ref might be close to his death then.

1851
St. Mary Whitechapel
Hereford Terrace
ANDERSON
James - 47 - solicitors clerk - born Dublin, Ireland
Eleanor - 41 - born Athlone, Ireland
Mary Jane - 19 - milliner - born Dublin *** arrived 1853
Sarah Anne - 15 - app. milliner - born Stepney *** arrived 1853
Ella Elizabeth - 12 - born Stepney
Marcella L. - 10 - born Stepney
Ann A. - 8 - born Stepney
Eleanor - 4 - born Whitechapel
Margaret - under 2 months - born Whitechapel
1853 'Carnatic' - Any ref to relatives already in Colony? See if the 3 sisters were the first of the family to arrive. That's curious. It says Sydney/Newcastle but it's not on the NSW list. Another source has this:

'Carnatic'
Origin: Plymouth 1852 Sep 21
Destination: Melbourne 1852 Dec 20

Dave

Hi Dave

Sands Directory start at 1858. I don't have any other directories earlier than 1858 to search. I can only access NSW Government Gazettes between 1832-1850.
