Hello Beckie,

Thanks.

Robert c.14 Feb 1819 so yes, he could have been born late 1818.

So there are children on the census and not in IGI or Sussex OPC:

1841 U.K census
C.P: Brighthelmstone
Hundred: Brighthelmstone
County: Sussex
R.D: Brighton
Address: Chalk Farm
DYKE Thomas, 1802 age 39 General Dealer, Sussex
DYKE Caroline, 1802 age 39 Sussex
DYKE Charlotte, 1828 age 13 Sussex
DYKE Louisa, 1830 age 11 Sussex
DYKE Caroline, 1835 age 6 Sussex
DYKE Mary, 1837 age 4 Sussex

Not an extracted record so not 100% reliable:

Caroline Paris - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Christening: 26 SEP 1802 East Dean, , Sussex
Parents - Alfred & Sarah

Regards,

Dave

Hi Daveham,
Why does one answer lead to another question?
Was trying to see who this gentleman belonged to, and found:
NSW Archives
List of firms:
ST JOHN’S PAROCHIAL DAY SCHOOL Parish Hall Darlinghurst
(Ernest Claude Beck (d 1962 Woollahra Pts Edmund & Anna Maria Beck), http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~tinstaafl/Church_Pages/oxwick.htm[/B
Ch of Edmund & Anna Maria Beck:
1855 Edward William
1856 Marion
1857 Anna Maria
1858 Ernest Claude
1859 Alice
1861 Reginald Frank
1865 Arthur Clement
1869 Sophia
Interestingly, the children of William (a clerk) & Louisa Dyke were also listed at Oxwick Pattesly All Saints Norfolk England. They are:
1818 Wilhelmina Sophia
1819 Arabella Louisa
1821 Mary Emma Poore
1822 Frances Amelia
1823 Emma Jane
1831 Edward Alfred
Does this mean that the Reverend Ernest Claude Beck is another relative in Australia?

Hello Beckie,

I dunno :) It is a rather common name in the south of England.

All I can say for sure is that we have a Robert (senior) BECK c. 17 Apr 1786 Tiverton, Devon - parents George & Suzanna MILLS - who arrived with a son and daughter, after the arrival of son William & spouse Charlotte with infant Louisa.

I don't know what happened to the other two children of Robert & Elizabeth DAVIES - Emma & Henry.

No other children listed on 1841 or 1851 census.

Regards,

Dave

Hello crankypants,

I presume Sussex is not in Pallot's - What about Camberwell, Surrey ?

Robert BECK born 1818 or 1819 Camberwell, Surrey - parents Robert & Elizabeth DAVIES - I presume it will only list his baptism date - 14 Feb 1819.

Elizabeth DAVIES b. abt 1787 Middlesex - probably too many when we don't know her parents.

Oh, I've left Australia >:D

Dave

Hello crankypants,

There might be too much English stuff to put here after all so I've started a new topic on the English board. ;)

Hello,

I just found out the Hugh MORWICK arrived in Sydney in 1838 at age 16

The Sydney Morning Herald - Saturday 23 February 1924
BALMAIN
Early History
Mr. Hogg, in compiling his records, very wisely went to the oldest residents of the district that he could hear of...Captain Morwick, whose name is closely associated in many ways with the borough, related how he came to Australia in 1838 in a ship...

Marriage: # 1828/1903 MORWICK HUGH HOGG ELIZABETH L PETERSHAM

So far I can't find the marriage in NLA. Elizabeth Laura was born in India in 1847. I bet there is a connection between her and the author of the Balmain history. Her death:

# 18618/1932 MORWICK ELIZABETH L THOMAS A MARTHA PETERSHAM

-------

Hugh was the Master of many vessels sailing to and from Sydney, Melbourne, Hobart and to India and NZ. For example:

The Courier (Hobart, Tas. ) - Saturday 15 December 1855
FOR MADRAS DIRECT, With Immediate Dispatch, the fine fast-sailing A 1 barque, SEA NYMPH, 463 Tons Register, HUGH MORWICK, Commander. For Freight or Passage apply to the Captain, on board; or to SAMUEL MOSES & Co., Agents 45, Murray-street. T 4723.

Of the three children Hugh and Elizabeth (nee BECK) had only James didn't die young. So where was he born? NSW, Victoria, Tasmania, India, England ??? between 1854 and 1860.

Regards,

Dave

This one says Hugh first arrived in Sydney in 1841 not 1838. ???

The Sydney Morning Herald - Wednesday 31 October 1906
PERSONAL
Captain Hugh Morwick, one of the oldest shipping identities connected with the port of Sydney, passed away at his residence, Pomona Cottage, Beattie-street, Balmain, on Thursday. Born at Pomona, in the Orkney Islands, Captain Morwick was early apprenticed to the sea, and as far back as 65 years ago, paid his first visit to Sydney as an apprentice boy in the brig Falmar, which brought up in what is now known as Darling Harbour, but was then designated Cockle Bay. He became master in 1854, his first command being a barque called the Caspar, and he was long identified with the Australian trade, ...

Captain Morwick was married twice, and leaves a widow, but no family. The remains were interred yesterday at the Necropolis, in the presence of a large assemblage. The Rev. H. C. Foreman conducted a short service at the house before the cortege started, and the Rev. G. O. Cocks, of the Central Methodist Mission Hall, officiated at the grave. Among those who attended the funeral were Mr. S. N. Hogg (brother-in-law), manager of the Balmain branch of the Bank of New South Wales; Messrs J. and Owen Hogg (nephews),...

Hello crankypants,

This changes everything:

The Sydney Morning Herald - Thursday 16 October 1862
DEATHS
On the 16th instant, Robert Hugh, last surviving child of Hugh and Elizabeth Morwick, Darlinghurst.

Death # 1048/1862 MORWICK ROBERT H HUGH ELIZABETH SYDNEY
186210568 122/1862 MORWICK ROBERT H AGE 3 YEARS DIED DARLINGHURST

It's not James then who is the one in the 1860 shipping record. That has to be Robert born about 1859, but where? That leaves James as the youngest, therefore born after 1862 but where?

The Argus (Melbourne, Vic.) - Wednesday 1 February 1860
SHIPPING INTELLIGENCE
ARRIVED JANUARY 30
'Dawn of Hope', Black Ball ship, 1,214 tons, George M'Kie, from Liverpool 18th October. Passengers- cabin :..., Captain H. Morwick, Mrs. Morwick and child,...

Please see what you can find for Robert and James. (Clara E born & died 1860 Sydney)

Regards,

Dave

EDIT:
The only one I found around the right date:

Births Mar 1859
MORWICK Thomasine Tynemouth 10B 134

Hello crankypants,

No, I'm not asleep. :D Been in NLA up to my...

Marriage of Elizabeth Laura's parents ??

V18371433 21/1837 HOGG THOMAS CROOK MARTHA CA= Church of England Sydney, St Phillip's

That would mean they travelled to India if it's the right marriage.

I'm still working on the HOGG connection with this:

Mr. S. N. Hogg (brother-in-law), manager of the Balmain branch of the Bank of New South Wales; Messrs J. and Owen Hogg (nephews),...

Dave

I'm having no luck with finding a birth for Robert or James MORWICK (even as MARWICK). They arrived back in Australia from Liverpool on 30 Jan 1860 with Robert. Given age at death he was born about 1859 so that means born in England, born on vessel or born in Australia and went to England and returned with parents. The latter unlikely. We don't really know when they arrived in England. All we know is that it's between 1855 & 1860. Marriage in 1854 in Sydney.

...and other relatives; Dr. Carruthers, Walter Scott Griffiths, and J. Druce (E. and S. Bank, Balmain),
I can't find any connection by marriage for CARRUTHERS or DRUCE yet.

I can't find a Dr. CARRUTHERS who graduated from Sydney University before 1906. He may have graduated in England even. There is also a Rev. Dr. but that's a different person. The medical doctor (I still can't find his given name) was associated with Mr. HOGG & Mr. DRUCE on the board of the Balmain Cottage Hospital. There is a J. and a W. DRUCE both bankers in Balmain or there is an error with the initial in one of the articles. ???

The Sydney Morning Herald - Thursday 22 March 1888
A special meeting of the subscribers to the Balmain Cottage Hospital was held yesterday evening to elect a treasurer in the room of Mr. John Tompkins, deceased. The president, Mr. Jacob Garrard, M. L. A., occupied the chair. Mr. W. Druce, local manager of the E S and A C Bank, was nominated by Messrs O. H. Chidgey and Alexander Gow, J. P. , and Mr. W. H. Lever, manager of the Weston-street branch of the Bank of N.S.W., was nominated by Dr. Carruthers and Mr. Hogg...

The Sydney Morning Herald - Friday 22 March 1929
MR. W. S. GRIFFITHS.
TOWN PLANNER'S DEATH.
Mr. Walter Scott Griffiths, South Australian Government town planner and chairman of the Central Town Planning Advisory Board, died in Adelaide on March 12. He was formerly a well-known architect in this State, and for some time was deputy-president of the Kuring-gai Shire. Before becoming town planner in South Australia be practised in New South Wales....He is survived by Mrs. Griffiths, two sons, three daughters and two stepsons.

Emma Florence (nee BECK) had 3 sons from her 1st marriage and one son died in 1906 so 'two stepsons' fits.

Hello crankypants,

If Emma Florence (nee BECK) 2nd spouse was Walter Scott and not Walter Samuel or whatever GRIFFITHS why is Walter Scott in South Australia as a town planner and Emma Florence in NSW in the E/R ?? 1930 Martin and 1943 Parramatta. Her death:

Death Reg# 18213/1945 GRIFFITHS EMMA FLORENCE WILLIAM CHARLOTTE EMMA MARRICKVILLE

The newspaper article has the middle name as Scott so did she go to SA but return to NSW when Walter died in 1929, or did they separate/divorce? The marriage was in 1899.

Please see if you can find Walter Scott & Emma Florence GRITTITHS in 1903. Thanks. Walter Scott was still in NSW in 1922 on Board of Fire Commissioners.

Dave
