Hello,

William CARTER b. abt 1836 Devon
- parents Edwin and Mary A.

I can't find the marriage or the baptism of William. It may be Plymouth area.

I'd like a look up for the family in 1841, 1851 and 1861 please.

One tree claims William married in NSW in 1864 although I can't find the marriage.

NSW birth 5118/1866 CARTER HENRY S - WILLIAM - MARIA - HAY

Regards,

Dave

Parents seems to be correct:

NSW death 11368/1917 CARTER WILLIAM - EDWIN - MARY A - COROWA

Death not in Ryerson.

Don't know yet if this is William's father:

6178/1873 CARTER EDWIN - UNKNOWN - UNKNOWN - PARRAMATTA

Only 32x Mary A to choose from. :D Don't know her maiden name or parents anyway.

Can find nothing yet in TROVE that helps.

Thanks Barbara.

I have very little to work with. I have no info re siblings. I have stuff in a tree I can't verify. I don't know when the family arrived in Australia or what state they arrived in.

Corowa is in NSW on the Murray river which is the border with Victoria. Actually the southern bank. :)

Can't find the marriage claimed to be in NSW in 1864 at Deniliquin.

Parents
William CARTER & Maria FINLEY ??

Deaths
6031/1887 CARTER MARIA AGE 48 YEARS DIED HAY - HAY
11368/1917 CARTER WILLIAM - EDWIN - MARY A - COROWA

Not in Ryerson

---------
Siblings
5586/1867 CARTER FLORENCE - WILLIAM - MARIA - HAY
6090/1869 CARTER HECTOR - WILLIAM - MARIA - HAY

William was a hotel keeper at Hay. I've just found this:

The Sydney Morning Herald - Tuesday 7 May 1844 p.2
THE ANNUAL LICENSING MEETING.
YESTERDAY being the day appointed by the
licensing Magistrates for hearing such applicants...
...
Edwin Carter, Green Gate, South Head Road....

So it looks as though it runs in the family.

Possible:

Marriage 1183/1877 PRIOR JOSEPH - CARTER ELLEN LOUISA - SYDNEY

Death 18643/1913 PRYOR ELLEN - EDWIN - MARY A - BROKEN HILL

Needs checking. Not in Ryerson.

Perhaps not with this birth:

V18503162 35/1850 CARTER ELLEN L - CHARLES - EMMA

Ruled it out with this marriage:

7658/1913 PRYOR EDWIN - LARKINS MARY A - BROKEN HILL

So I can't say I have found Ellen in NSW.

Well now. A tree - HERE

It shows Edwin's death in Devon and three daughters ending up in America.

No marriage or death for William James.

There is nothing in the NSW BMD that suggests William has a middle name James.

It might be coincidence then that there is an Edwin CARTER hotel keeper in NSW in 1844.

Still have this death - also with no middle name James.

11368/1917 CARTER WILLIAM - EDWIN - MARY A - COROWA
So does William belong to the family in the 1841 census or not? Where is he in 1841? Why would three sisters go to America and he was the only one who came to Australia?

I think I prefer gardening. :2fun: It's not raining at the moment so I'd better go for a few hours.
