Mary Ann Gittoes
Baptism: 1 Mar 1820 b. 4 July (no year)
Father: Edward Gittoes
Mother: Mary Ann Gittoes
Parish or Poor Law Union: St Marylebone
Borough: Westminster
Parish Registers

Mary Ann and brother William arrived 29 Nov 1829 'Lady Davidson' with convict mother Mary Marshall.

I have the Old Bailey records.

Father is Edward Gittoes but I have nothing on him. Don't know if he arrived as a convict as well.

The other problem is the mother of William and Mary Ann was a Mary Ann Byers ?? not Mary Marshall unless an alias. Or Byers is an error.

Another inquest was held at Walter's Inn, Camden, on the body of William Cranfield, who met with an accident, on Thursday last. Deceased had been drinking for weeks, but was said not to have been what is called drunk at the time of the accident. Our roads are bad, and riders require to be cautious, but deceased and party rode off at the usual pace, his horse fell, threw him off, rolled over him it appears, and caused internal injuries, of which he died, on Sunday night last. Verdict accordingly. He has left a widow and 5 young children, the youngest being only 4 weeks old.

https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/60497697

Now IF i have all the above right the inquest only mentions 5 kids which would have been the 5 to Elizabeth so where are the kids he had to Mary Ann.

Thanks gibbo.

I've not followed any of the children and I had not considered the possibility of a remarriage for William.

Title: William Cranfield, one of 190 convicts transported on the Mangles, July 1824.
Details: Sentence details: Convicted at Suffolk Assizes for a term of life on 27 March 1824.
Vessel: Mangles.
Date of Departure: July 1824.
Place of Arrival: New South Wales.
Source: Australian Joint Copying Project. Microfilm Roll 88, Class and Piece Number HO11/5, Page Number 166

I have his ToL etc but none give his age. I noticed 3x deaths in index for a William.

CRANFIELD William - 'Mangles' 1824 36/590 Ticket of Leave [4/4103; Reel 924] District: Camden; Tried: Suffolk ass

NV= CofE Camperdown; Newtown - that's Sydney inner suburb not Camden ??

"Death in 1860 was due to an injury received by a fall from a horse at Camden, NSW. His family in Australia continued to be involved with horses and his great-great grand-daughter has a horse stud at Goulburn, NSW. William Cranfield (my great-great grandfather) married twice - first marriage was 05/07/1835 at Cobbity, NSW, to Mary Ann Gittoes (nee Allen) and they had 7 children, and his second marriage was 25/05/1853 at Newtown, NSW, to Elizabeth Rourke and they had 4 children. I am a descendent of the Cranfield/Gittoes marriage and my great-grandfather was their 7th child, Charles."

Thanks gibbo.

That has several errors. 5 children from second marriage.

Mary Ann Gittoes was a spinster. Her maiden name was not Allen. Her mother Mary A Marshall married Samuel Allen.

Thanks Ellie.

Pity he was not sent to VDL then I'd have his Ident and his parents. The NSW Idents are on film at State Records Authority of New South Wales but reading room is closed and a long way from where I live. Bus, train then bus and take 2 -3 hours to get there.

William was born in Essex and was 16 years old when convicted - (of Burglary) his accomplices were all hanged.

By 1841 he had his own farm at Spring Creek, later owned a hotel at Narellan.

Records of transportees to Australia, 1787-1879
Convict censuses, musters, pardons and tickets of leave, including series HO 10, HO 11 and CO 209/7, can be searched at ancestry.com.au (charges apply). The New South Wales census (HO 10/21 – HO 10/27) is the most complete. You can often find:

  • biographical information
  • whether each settler came free or as a convict, or was born in the colony
  • the name of their ship and their year of arrival

Some is on line from NSW Records. Some is on film at major libraries all currently closed for use of microfilms. The full set of films at NSW Archives a long journey away also closed.

Some is available on A....

I'll return to this tomorrow.
