I'd like a check please of Emma's status in 1861, married or widow. If not a widow, I'd like a look up in 1861 please for spouse William.

I can't see a death for William senior after 1851 in England.

Emma is listed as "wife" - not head, which suggests her hubby isn't too far away!

There are three trees with this family going back many generations but it seems until I started posting queries, because of a Queensland connection, not one of the tree authors had any idea of William senior's marriage or the fact Emma and son ended up in Australia.

So this is charting new territory.

That's great! You have given a new incentive to lots of others!

I've just been searching for William D* born 1829 +/- 2, in Hertfordshire. There are 38 results, with none in Bedfordshire.

Of those hits, none looks like a mistranscription of Defrance/Dufrain etc.

Maybe William was working - sorting letters? - on the night of the census, and wasn't included!

Thanks for looking. Perhaps a line for head of household is missing in the transcription. I think the age in census is out not that I have proof this is correct:

William de FRAINE b. 1824 Berkhamstead - parents William & Ann CHESTER.

Other children born Berkhamstead are:

Philip 1839

William married Ann CHESTER in 1821 in St.Mary's, Aylesbury, Bucks. She was born 1797 in Thame, Oxfordshire, and died 1865 in Berkhamsted. William remarried.

Please see if you can find them in 1841 and 1851.

William b. 1800 Aylesbury, Bucks, spouse of Ann died 1879 Berkhamstead: Occupation: Hairdresser and Perfumier, at 92 High Street, Berkhamsted in 1851. I have no info re 1841.

Using the info on the revised birth date for William, I searched for William D* and William F* in 1861, but nothing jumps out as a mistranscription!
