had posted before re: william douglas shennan, just received death certificate and unfortunately i had wrong family connected.

william douglas shennan b 1860 lauriston scotland, occupation tool maker, father john shennan, farmer, mother mary yann, he married in australia in 1880 to jessie struthers, i ordered marriage certificate but shows no family information for william or jessie, would it be possible to lookup scottish census for this family, to find siblings of william douglas, or if possible marriage or death entry for parents, i cannot find an australian death entry for them.

thank you

hi, i looked up lauriston on google,

Lauriston is an area of central Edinburgh, Scotland. The former location of the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary, the area is undergoing a major re-development known as Quartermile. New apartments, restaurants, hotels and offices are planned. Lauriston is adjacent to The Meadows, a large public park in the centre of Edinburgh, and is home to the Edinburgh College of Art and the Lothian and Borders Fire and Rescue Service Headquarters and Museum of Fire.

thank you

Hi Slr6000,

When you have posted 1 more reply to thread, you'll be able to PM(Private Message), and use a few more facilities of the site.

You will not be able to upload your diary info, until the your 3rd post has been put up on here.

This reason for the 3 post moderation, is for the security of this site, and also for members.:)

No worries
I visited the Library today to get a copy of the Diary but it has to be done over the internet and it takes a few days.
I did get a chance to have a look at the diary and transcript, the dairy looked too fragile to touch but went through the transcript.
It's a diary from when he left his home and travelled to the port and he writes about waiting for the ship to be ready to sail and waiting for all the other passengers to board and about a small young lady that is told she is too sick to travel.
Not much happens on the voyage he writes about what he has to eat and the conditions on board, a sailor finds some rum and gets drunk and is put in irons.
I think 3 small children died of whooping cough and were put over board, a young man beat his wife up and the crew had some words to him.
He talks about there being no wind and sitting still bobbing up and down in the ocean for weeks, not getting anywhere and not thinking they will ever get past the cape.
Then getting to Cape Otway and The Lighthouse then a little about when they arrived and travelled somewhere.

If you want a copy I would just order the transcript as someone has gone through and typed out the original so it's easy reading the other thing that's there is a news paper clipping from the 1960 about the diary so not worth getting?
Here is the link to order the copy https://www.nla.gov.au/apps/copiesdirect?source=cd&sourcevalue=Manuscript&Button1=Next+>
Hope this helps.

I’m not sure what the paper was all about but it had some of what was in the diary, i think it may be on when the dairy was given to the library but not sure.
You can order a copy of all the stuff that was there, they will copy it and email it out. I think to get a copy of the original hand written diary, the typed copy and the paper clipping was about $26au.
or just the transcript would only be about $13au

Ms M.R. Shennan, transcribed the diary in 1987, Shennans still live at that address

Address removed for security of the individual mentioned.
