Hello crankypants,

Thank you very much. That looks like the family. Please see if you can find Edwin in 1851. Thanks.

Dave

Hi Dave

At times like this I do need a glass of red, preferably a Penfold's:D :D

As you would expect I can find his parents and his brother but as for Edwin he's done a runner.:'(

I did google Edwin Thomas PENFOLD and was surprised no other researcher has the year or ship Edwin arrived in Australia.
I couldn't find any shipping records for him either, did find him with wife and seven children coming back to Sydney from London in 1878.
I read the bio for his son and says Edwin arrived in NSW 1853 after working in the goldfields, perhaps he was in Vic or W.A before 1853.?

Let me know if you need anymore on Edwin.

cheers

Hello crankypants,

Thanks. Yes, I've seen nothing that says when he arrived in Australia. I have found lots of stuff with full dates for events for lots of descendants. Actually they are known as the stationery firm. Do you have any more details on his return to Australia with his children?

Regards,

Dave

Hello crankypants,

Thanks a lot. Question: How did you find them? If you don't know the vessel and the month and year how can you find anyone you are searching for in that database?

Regards,

Dave

Hello crankypants,

Would be interested to know if you can connect them to
William Penfold and Elizabeth Smith.

Hello Lamplight,

Yes, with only William not Willian F or more in the census how do you prove the "PENFOLD William 1835 age 6 Surrey" in the 1841 census is the William Frederick c. 6 Jul 1834 Tooting Graveney, Surrey - Batch: C056081 without his mother's maiden name, SMITH. Edwin Thomas appears in the same batch with parents William and Elizabeth also minus SMITH.

They are the only two in the batch with those parents. I'd say they are brothers given the naming pattern of the children as well.

Do we have the family together in 1851? That's one census listing I don't have, nor do I have membership of A.....y.

Dave

Willian Frederick Penfold was christened 6 July 1834 Tooting Graveney, Surrey, England.

See the IGI.

Extracted birth or christening record for the locality listed in the record. The source records are usually arranged
chronologically by the birth or christening date.
Source Information:
Batch No.: Dates: Source Call No.: Type: Printout Call No.: Type:
C056081 1684 0307728 Film 6906158 Film
C056081 1800 - 1844 0307728 Film NONE

Often if the family went to the same church you will pick up other family memebers from the batch records. C in front of the batch number tells you it is a christening record. These would be extracted by volunteers from microfilms made of the records.

Edwin Thomas Penfold was Christened 1 Jun 1828

Again from the IGI and the same batch files.

Thank you for the information on William. I also thought he was one of the family.

I still have not figured out how these forums work. I get lost in the lists.

A Batch file will be from the same church. The chances are they attended church regularly. They were a religious family.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burwood,_New_South_Wales

Nearby Woodstock in Church St was built in the early 1870s by tobacco manufacturer Edwin Penfold.

Edwin Thomas Penfold paid for the building of a church in Burwood, Sydney.

Hello Lamplight,

Interesting, thanks. I didn't know about Edwin's contribution to Burwood.

Have put the references in case anyone else would like to have a look and see if they can decipher the surname.

Hello Julie,

Thanks. I agree the name 'Romfred' is suspect but I'm wondering about the change of occupation from upholsterer: "Burwood - nearby Woodstock in Church St was built in the early 1870s by tobacco manufacturer Edwin Penfold."

What we don't have yet is any Sands Directory Listing for Edwin in NSW.

He arrived before 1853 and that's all we can say until he is found in shipping records.

Regards,

Dave
