hi

i was wondering if anyone had access to the ockbrook burials for the period 1831-1841. im stuck on my great x3 grandfather, i cant find out which william hill he is out of several contenders christened about the right time, hence cannot go back further as i dont know his parents.

i know theres a william hill buried there in 1830, that i believe might be his father. ive seen my ggf's two marriage registers but neither mention his age nor his parents.

his last child was born in 1831, he was dead by the census of 1841. so i need to find out when he died (there is a candidate in 1838, but theres no info) and crucially how old he was.

thanks if anyone can help.

Can you share details of Marriages and names conserned ?

Ellie
hi

he married ann at ockbrook in 1806 , then rachael hutchinson at ashbourne in 1816 before moving back to ockbrook. he was a miller, but wasnt by the 1820's.

ive got those census records, hence why i know he had died by 1841.

but i cannot find his age at any event, there is no gravestone for him, his possible dad william, at ockbrook or local sites. his son edwin is my great great grandfather. i think my only chance, unless i can discover a will, is discovering his burial place (probably ockbrook) and hopefully his age was recorded. only then will i know which william hill was baptised in the mid-late 18th century.

cheers

rob.

You could try for a poor relief record ,as his wives could have claimed for a burial ,etc.

Edit-•As a result of the Poorlaw Amendment Act reforms of 1834, the parish became a member of the Shardlow Poorlaw Union.Edit-Derbyshire Record Office, New Street, Matlock, Derbyshire. Relatively few records survive — holdings include Guardians' minute books (1837-1890

Ann Taylor first wife.

yes pentridge is now pentrich , ann came from there.

not sure what you are getting at re - george. im abit distracted by what my mum uncovered 25 years ago. she read in a book about ockbroom that there were two millers, father and son, both called william. now i have failed to find any conformation about this in any local history books. however..

there is a william hill buried at ockbrook in november 1830. aged 70. now this could be 'my' great x3 grandad - but that would mean he married ann aged 46, and rachael aged 56 before he started having children. of course ann could be his second wife, not his first! maybe he did marry 3 times? his last child, eliza, was born in early 1831, so it is possible that he died before seeing her.

on the other hand william 1830 might be 'my' williams dad - supporting the 'two williams' theory.

good point!!! now thats a line i hadnt considered.

there is a close link with the village of mugginton, about 15 miles from ockbrook. there are hills there, and its where williams second wife rachael came from, in fact their first born son - samuel - was born in mugginton. it also explains the marriage in ashbourne, close by.

a big thanks for your help so far. :)

Believe at that time if the Wifes mother was still living then they liked to go home for birth of first child.

Edit-are you aware that being in Ockbrook does not mean you were born there in Parish records.

Edit-Bacholor, age 21and upwards, usual abode for the space of 4 wks. Ann Taylor ,aged 21 yrs and upwards

Edit- both born c1785

no, shardlow is southeast of ockbrook, on the river trent next to leicestershire.

ive seen/copied all the births of a william in the 1780's, there are more and have william/mary as parents. that suggests the local historian who wrote that there were two williams, father and son, millers at ockbrook.

i have been unable to confirm this though. if i could discover who the william buried at ockbrook in 1830 aged 70 is buried alongside then that might confirm or not whether there was two williams. father and son.

hmmm

i cannot locate a death for william, still. his last child was bron in 1831/2 and his wife rachael was a widow by 1841 - the census.

ive gone through the parish records for all the known places he has lived - nothing. ive tried a countrywide search, but even that hasnt revealed where and when he died. (he was born by c 1785 but most likely after 1780 when his parents married - his father was born in 1760 so it does narrow down the range).

so where could his death be? ive no reason to think he joined the army at c45, perhaps he was imprisoned (he was prosecuted for short changing flour, but i dont know when). ive found no reference to him being in prison or even convicted though.

anyone any further thoughts?
