Thanks GB,

This one is a real puzzle.

Marriages Jun Qtr 1851
Hoggard William Breedon Southwell 15 985
Short Rebecca Southwell 15 985

Marriage Edwinstowe
16 June 1851 William Breedon Hoggard and Rebecca Short.

The William in Edwinstowe is a blacksmith son of a blacksmith and can be found in 1861 census married but with no children.

Spouse Rebecca and daughter Elizabeth are in Australia by at least 1863 and can't be found in 1861 census. Nor have they been found yet in shipping records.

Did they walk out on William?

Is it coincidence there appears to be 2x William Breedon/Bredon HOGGARDs ??

If Rebecca and daughter left England because spouse William died in 1852 then who is this married William in Edwinstowe a blacksmith with no family?

Known facts from Parish records:

Marriage Edwinstowe
16 June 1851 William Breedon Hoggard and Rebecca Short.

Baptism Edwinstowe
22 Feb 1852 Elizabeth dau of William & Rebecca Hoggard abode Edwinstowe father a blacksmith

We either have 1x William B. and Rebecca left England after he died. Or we have 2x William B. and Rebecca left him in Edwinstowe where he is in 1861.

Rebecca is in Sydney in 1863.

We are not sure how old William was when they mar. if he was an older guy and b. 1795-1800 ish, that would bring the 1856 death back in

I have found some trees.

One has the death in 1856 but I think I can find something to rule that one out. Different parents as per family in census.

Two trees have his death in 1854 in Edwinstowe but I can't see such a reg.

They have his birth as 1826:

Baptism Edwinstowe
13 March 1825 William Burden son of Samuel & Hannah Hoggard father a blacksmith.

All seem to agree his parents were:

Father
Samuel Hoggard 1790-1849
Mother
Hannah Eldridge nee Massey 1790-1876

Seems Rebecca's brother John & family arrived assisted to NSW in 1841.

I wonder if there is a deposit record for arrival of Rebecca.

I can't find these two 1851 records in FS:

There is a Rebecca Short born abt 1817 Grantham (Lincs) living in the civil parish of Edwinstowe, reg district Southwell in 1851.
1851 census Edwinstowe
Hannah Hoggard Head W 60 Blacksmith
Ann dau 25
William son Unm 24 Blacksmith

1861
There is a William born Edwinstowe who is a Journeyman Blacksmith born 1826
living with the Alsop Family on Town Street Edwinstowe he is Married but no family with him.

Rebecca 1852-1863. Elizabeth 1852-1870.

Seems there are no other siblings for Robert & Rebecca.

She was a cook at the vicarage in Edwinstowe in 1851. Also 10 years older if that is the right William.

If the blacksmith baptised 1825 is the one then it appears he is listed as married but with no family in 1861 so why do all the trees have his death before 1861?

Coincidence the middle name is so similar ???

Deaths Sep 1852
HOGGARD William Bredon St Geo. Han. Sq 1a 144

I wish we could rule that one out.
