Hi All,
what would be the best option to find out more about my GG Grandfather military record who was in the 13th Royal Infantry based at Walmer Barracks when he got married in 1845. In the 1851 Census he was a labourer based in Wincester

many thanks

In 1851 he had his family in barracks with him :-
wife Mary Ann, 28, born ? Kent
son John, 3, b Dublin
son Ed J, 1, b Belfast

obviously recently returned from a posting in Ireland if that is any help

Also he is listed under "13th regiment of industry" at the barracks

His service record is on Find My Past, 5 pages all clearly written. In 1851 he was JAMESON, not Jamieson and that is what his service record is under.

He joined aged 14 in the East Indies 1 Dec 1836 (was his father a soldier there? Quite possibly as the 13th light infantry was in Chatham getting ready for service in India in 1822 when William was born there)
Served 8 yr 8 mth East Indies, 4 yr Gibraltar rest of service "home"(Ireland would be home service)

one court martial, 84 days in prison

several good conduct badges and three campaign medals

discharged with pension 17th Feb 1862.
Intended place of residence :- Thurso Caithness

You really need to download the full document to see all the details, physical description etc. Wish I had such good detail about my ancestors !
