Mr. William Leggo, who died at "The Pines" Wallacia, at the age of 83, was a Crimean veteran. Born at Penzance, Cornwall, he enlisted at the age of 19 in the Army Works Corps for service in the Crimea, and experienced all the terrors of the Crimean winter. At the conclusion of the war he came to Australia in the sailing ship Hastings. After an unsuccessful attempt at the gold diggings he engaged at the building trade, and became one of Sydney's foremost builders. He took a prominent part in the Labor movement many years ago, and was secretary of the Carpenters and Joiners' Progressive Society, while he initiated the first 8-hour picnic to Balmoral.
