Back to Mauchline. That's a real puzzle.

I searched for a death for Jane/Jean and didn't find one to fit assuming her maiden name was MALCOLM and that she didn't remarry. I'm thinking with lack of death with maiden name as MALCOLM and pob as Mauchline that it's not a cousin after all. Lots of Jean/Jane born Mauchline if she was not a MALCOLM.

Alex the visitor is perhaps a nephew. Time will tell if the other family can be found in 1871 as per other topic.

Yes, that's why that marriage is of interest.

No Robert MALCOLM/MALCOM/MALCOME in Lanark in 1850 with father = William and mother blank.

Will extend the search.

No Robert/Rbt MALCOLM/MALCOM/MALCOME in Lanark in 1849-1851 with father blank and mother blank.

I just spent 6 credits on Rebecca's birth and it's Jane MALCOLM M.S. MALCOLM.

I have searched all of Scotland for a Jane/Jean with married name MALCOLM/MALCOM/MALCOME and other surname the same with all combinations and I found one death in 1878 in West Kilbride, Ayr for a Jane MALCOLM ((MALCOM) Age 76, which only fits if the age is 25 years out.


and one more:

Death 1884 Jane MALCOLM (MALCOME) Not Ayr or Lanark Age 71 so does not fit either if age roughly right.
