Born 30 Jul 1903 in Hazelbank Place, Cathcard, Glasgow.

William was supposed to have been the first child baptized in the Merrylea Church, Cathcart, hence his chosen middle name.

Any chance of finding his parents? I have not looked at the 1901 census.

Yes, that is correct, he did die in West Australia (where I was born) - he is my uncle, and the family are travelling to UK next month, and I said I'd help them advance a bit further before they left.

At least his father being Alexander, could help locate him in the 1901 census, (where I put up a thread) - in fact Alexander could have been on other censuses too.

I apologise to Dave for putting this thread on another page - I should have asked for the 1911 census, not 1901.

I have now found out that Alexander Mitchell's wife was Jane Henderson Crum, but have no marriage for them as yet.

So I just have William Merrylea Mitchell born 30 Jul 1903 in Hazelbank Place, Cathcart, and christened in Merrylea Church

Hi Jood

I looked on SP as you probably have and I can't see an obvious birth for William.

That may help finding his mother.

There is only one hit for the marriage on SP and breaking it down it is 1902, so sadly you wont find them together in 1901:(

Hi Jood,
By looking at WA ERs that his father also arrived in WA with new wife or possibly Jane as Ellen?? Or could it be a brother??

1925 ER for WA Balkatta Fremantle
Alexander Mitchell at Powell St Osborne Park a groom with Ellen Mitchell housewife and William Merrylee Mitchell a coach painter

1931 William has married (in Perth 1930 to Isabel Jessie Kate Lochlin) and 35 Dunedin St with her and father/brother and Ellen still at Powell St.
1936 Alex and Ellen still in Powell St and William & Isobel have moved to 62 Elizabeth St.

There’s a gap until 1958 when William and Isobel show again in WA at 35 Dunedin St Mount Hawthorn and he’s a painter now, same for 1963 & 1972
regards

The information about William living in Elizabeth Street, North Perth - I already knew, as he was my uncle, and I spent a lot of time at his place. My cousins just want to progress further on for his parents - they told me themselves that their paternal Grandfather was Alexander, and his wife Jane Henderson Crum. (What they didnt tell me is he remarried!)

I was given a date, and I can only assume its his (William Merrylea) birthdate 30 July 1903. I would have to say that is correct, as he died in June 1974 aged 70.

I have just rung my cousin in Perth and I found out that Alexander's wife apparently died (perhaps on the ship coming out?) He married his housekeeper Ellen - I presume that is the one shown in 1916.

I was able to find out that William Merrylea had a sister and two half brothers, Jean, Alexander & Gordon. Jean being of the first wife Jane.

I hope that might help. I understand from my cousin that one of her nephews(on their fathers side) may have already done some history on Ancestry - his surname was Parsons. As I don't subscribe to Ancestry, I can't look.

Hope this may help?

A bit more information has come through. Seems the first lady was Jane Henderson, I don't know where Crum comes into it. Its part of a letter sent to the Merrylea Church - they dont have an answer as yet. But maybe there might be something under Henderson rather than Crum.

I dont myself have Williams birth/death/marriage cert.

It's all a bit confusing. I am only trying to help them before they go to Scotland, so they know what they are looking for.

Just received another email.

William Merrylea Mitchell was christened at the Merrylea Parish Church 25/10/1903 as the first baby. It seems it was known as the Tin Roof Church as it was rebuilt in 1914 to the larger church. I am writing to the church people to find out more. The minister was named Oliver and came from the Mary Hill Church of Scotland so I’ve asked if they can find more about the family.

From the birth certificates:

1903 the family was in Hazelbank Place, Cathcart

1905 the family was in Greenside Place, Cathcart

1908 “ “ “ “ in Carfin Street, Cathcart

Hi Jood,

WA BMD shows a Alexander Mitchell marries a Ellen Jones at Leederville WA 1916

A question for anyone who has purchased a WA Marriage certificate – do they contain much information?

On WA BMD a Jane H Mitchell death Perth in 1913 on Reg no: 227 – I would suggest to confirm Jane’s names/parents that the Death Certificate should be purchased and what children she had etc, that way it is confirmed information and not passed down from family un-sourced.

Yes, marriage cert for 1932 shows When & where married, christian name & surname of parties- ages - profession -Place & country of birth - residence, fathers christian name and surname (of both parties) profession of father - Mothers christname and maiden name of both parties.

That is the only one I have for WA.

Thanks for the information re Janes death. I will ask re death certificate.

It appears William was christened 25/10/1903

The children were
William Merrylea Mitchell 30-7-1903 family living Hazelbank Place, Cathcart
Alexander Mitchell 1905 familly living in Greenside Place, Cathcart
Jean Henderson Mitchell 1908 living in Carfin Street, Cathcart

I got the entry from Anc. I think the WA death entries end in 1971 ?
Horse, I didn't have to get a death certificate for W.M Mitchell (my uncle) as my family advised me (I was living in Sydney at the time), so the death date is correct.

I have a little more information now. I believe Jane & Alexander married in 1900. I will beable to tell you more later (hopefully).

What I did find out from the local paper in WA, something about where she came from (in the death notices) -

The deceased, a daughter of the late Mr. Wm Crinn, was bom at Glasgow, Scotland, but lived the greater portion of her life In Dunoon. Argyleshlre, Scotland, where she was for many years in the employ of Messrs. William Maltham and Co, (fishmongers), She returned to Glasgow on her marriage, and came to this State (WestAust)a little over two years ago
She was 36 when she died in 1913 (if that is correct) which would put her age at roughly 1877 -so I was wondering if she was included in the 1881 census, and her parents in earlier censuses at Argyllshire? We find out also that her father was William Crum (not Crinn, which is a typo)
