Hi there - found your message while searching and joined up, I'm a newbie but...

I think I can help if you are still looking - William Russell Riley married my First Cousin, 4 times Removed Mary Ann Isabel McGeorge. Here is a detailed obituary from the Goulburn Evening Penny Post 21 Dec 1915 - I am much interested in Goulburn goings on... Isabel's Mother was a daughter of Richard Teece (my 5th GGF) both he and John McGeorge were with the NSW Veterans Corps - I know more too if you are interested

OBITUARY. Mrs. Isabel Riley, relict of the late Mr. William Russell Riley, formerly proprietor of the Goulburn "Herald," died at her late residence, "Heraldene," Bradley-street, at twenty minutes past one on Saturday afternoon from senile de bility. The deceased lady, who was 81 years of age, was the oldest daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. John McGeorge, and was born at Veterans' Flat, a few miles from Goulburn, on August 16, 1834. She was married in St. Saviour's Church of England by the Rev. W. Sowerby in 1855 and had resided in Goulburn all her life. Her husband pre-deceased her over five years. She leaves five children--Frank, of the Lands Titles Office, Sydney, Mrs. C. W. Furner, Alfred (editor of the Goulburn "Herald"), and Florence and Lilian, residing at home. The funeral took place on Sunday after noon, the body being interred in the Methodist Old Cemetery. The late Mrs. Riley was a woman of fine character and was held in affectionate regard by all who knew her. As indicative of her disposition it may be mentioned that one of her rules of life was to do at least one kind deed every day.

This one has always puzzled me:

name: William Riley
gender: Male
baptism/christening date: 12 Apr 1829
baptism/christening place: OLD CHURCH,SAINT PANCRAS,LONDON,ENGLAND
birth date: 10 Jan 1829
birthplace:
death date: 4 Jul 1830 ??
name note:
race:
father's name: James Riley
father's birthplace:
father's age:
mother's name: Mary
mother's birthplace:
mother's age:
indexing project (batch) number: C04793-2
system origin: England-ODM
source film number: 597808, 598162, 598163, 598164
reference number:

It's an extracted record meaning it's taken from the original parish records and not a user submitted unverified record.

Another query.

St Saviour Goulburn County of Argyle Page 20
No 374
William Russell Riley otp Bachelor
Mary Ann Isabel MacGeorge otp Spinster
married in Church by License
Twenty Eighth August 1855 By me William Sowerby
Both signed
Witnesses: Sarah McGeorge, T. ? McGeorge, both of Goulburn

I can't find Sarah as one of the daughters of John & Susan. I also can't find any with first initial T.

Is this the wrong one?

V1833846 19/1833 McGEORGE MARY A - JOHN - SUSAN

Death has parents as John & Mary?

The obituary says born 16 Aug 1834.

Now I am really confused. None of the dates agree:

V1833846 19/1833 MCGEORGE MARY A JOHN SUSAN ** 1834
V1835288 19/1835 MCGEORGE MATILDA JOHN SUSAN
V18421472 26A/1842 MCGEORGE ROSAMOND JOHN SUSAN ** 1847
V18461814 31A/1846 MCGEORGE MARGARET JOHN SUSAN
V18531836 56/1853 MCGEORGE ANDREW JOHN SUSAN ** 1855

Where is son John?

Why Susan and not Mary?

Someone must be using the year of baptism as the year of birth.

They are all on film at the library so birth and baptism dates can be checked.

Visited the library today and managed to look this one up in the 90 minutes I had on the film viewer.

No idea why the index has Susan because the record clearly has mother as Mary.

Bap V1833846 19/1833 McGEORGE MARY A - JOHN - SUSAN ?

I have the children of John and Mary in my tree on Ancestry as:
Mary Ann Isabel McGeorge 1837 – 1915
Sarah McGeorge 1842 – 1918
John McGeorge 1845 – 1923
Rosamond McGeorge 1847 – 1896
Andrew McGeorge 1855 – 1916

I also have a photo of Mary's (Sr) tombstone that I took in Goulburn (it also in the stone for Rosamond and John Jr)

The 1835 - 1837 difference is odd for Mary Ann

It is a bit confusing in that the year in the index is not always the correct year of birth. However, the record for Mary Ann is clear and easy to read so it seems she was born in 1833 and baptised in 1835.

Next time I'm at the library I'll try to get the baptisms of the others.

This is the only burial record 1835-1838 so there does not seem to be a 2nd daughter named Mary Ann born 1837 following a death of the one born 1833.

V18351832 19/1835 MC GEORGE MATILDA INFANT

This is another puzzle I've not solved:

Witnesses: Sarah McGeorge, T. ? McGeorge, both of Goulburn
That marriage record is not easy to read so I'll have to have another look at it to see if I change my mind about it being 'Sarah' and 'T.' or something else.

The marriage record from a different film:

Page 22
Marriages solemnized in the Parish of St. Saviour in the County of Argyle in the Year 1855
No. 374
William Russell Riley of this Parish Bachelor
Mary Ann Isabel MacGeorge of this Parish Spinster
married in this Church by License with consent of -
Twenty Eighth August 1855 By me William Sowerby
Both signed [W. R. Riley] [ M. A. I. McGeorge]
Witnesses: Sarah McGeorge of Goulburn, Jn. McGeorge of Goulburn

So who is that Sarah?

I can't find a reg for daughter Sarah around 1842. If that's the one then a witness to marriage at age 13. ???

Sarah was not 13 in 1855:

Name: Sarah Mcgeorge
Gender: Female
Christening Date: 17 Mar 1839
Christening Place: St. Saviour Goulburn, New South Wales, Australia
Birth Date: 22 Jan 1839

This one is wrong.

Name: Rosamond Mcgeorge
Gender: Female
Christening Date: 17 Jul 1841
Christening Place: Goulburn, New South Wales, Australia
Birth Date:
Birthplace: Goulburn, New South Wales, Australia
Death Date:

Mother's Name: Mary

Mother's Age:
Indexing Project (Batch) Number: C00349-1
System Origin: Australia-EASy
GS Film number: 1238833
Reference ID: St. Saviors Goulburn

The record on film shows that is the birth date and that the baptism was in August 1842 but the day is cut by the tight binding.

There is another record that gets it right:

Name: Rosamond Mcgeorge
Gender: Female
Christening Date: Aug 1842
Christening Place: ST. SAVIOUR, ARGYLE, NEW SOUTH WALES, AUSTRALIA
Birth Date: 17 Jul 1841
Birthplace: New South Wales, Australia

There are two different sets of films. One is a film of the actual parish register and a copy of that set is help by the Mitchell Library in Sydney and others.

The other set is the film of the extracts of the register as sent to the Registrar General in Sydney. That set of films is held by the State Library in Sydney and by several other local libraries and others.

I have viewed the set at a local library in Sydney. I have not yet viewed the set at the Mitchell Library.
