William Taylor. 1885 electoral rolls, Canewdon.

On the way home from London we stopped at Essex Record Office for a few hours and I looked through some electoral rolls. You have to order the original but it takes about 15 minutes so not too bad.

I was considering ordering the 1886 electoral rolls to see if William Taylor from Canewdon was listed as he was in the Rochford Workhouse in 1891 and in Canewdon in 1871 but nowhere to be seen in 1881. I didn't think he would appear on the rolls but in the end I bit the bullet and ordered the 1886 electoral rolls for south Essex and looked through Canewdon and found William Taylor Snr and William Taylor Junior living in the village. My William had a son William so it must be them.

The rolls came into force in November 1885 to January 1887. This means William was in Canewdon in late 1885 still so was admitted to the workhouse in about 1886. He is not on the 1888 registers.
