I did not have this earlier marriage. No info received from a descendant that Grace had married twice. Curious.

Grace West
Scotland, Marriages, 1561-1910
marriage: 04 Jun 1869 Edinburgh Parish,Edinburgh,Midlothian,Scotland
spouse: Alexander Hastings

Possibly this one:

Thomas Walker
Scotland, Marriages, 1561-1910
marriage: 28 Mar 1812 Edinburgh Parish,Edinburgh,Midlothian,Scotland
spouse: Janet Cowan

Look at the first C in Church. Perhaps it is Cowans.

Hi Dave

Certainly one of your more intriguing cases...

No sign of Catherine, but fits with the 1880 marriage, widow of Alexander Hastings, Upholsterer. Haven't found his death yet.

Geoff

Hello Geoff,

Thanks for that.

I didn't have Grace in census in 1861 or 1871. I have her with William 1881 and 1891.

Now I can't find the copy of her death certificate. I thought I had it because I have the SP index entry:

1896 WEST GRACE WALKER F 55 STOBHILL /MIDLOTHIAN 698/B0 0027

Burial Book: Grace Walker West aged 56 died at Clay House 5 July 1896.

I can't find a tree that helps with this WALKER family.

It's 40 C here so I'll have to let the computer cool down. Don't like the graphics card going over 60 C. :D

No, I could only find one very brief tree on Anc. that was no help, no marriages etc.

I'll have another look.

We could do with some heat here :)

Geoff

Hi Dave

No obvious trees for the Walkers, not even Thomas with Jane/Jean.

At the moment your William Glespie, mother Jean Cowans still a candidate  His marriage to Grace, however, cites his mother fairly clearly as Jane

Even the 41/51 censuses are not congruent.

One to think about..

Geoff

Hello Geoff.

Thanks for looking. Yes, no trees of any help.

The BOM has had to add an extra colour to the temperature map - 50+ for some parts of Australia today. Only got to 41.8 in Sydney. You may have 15 degrees. :)

I'm not worried about the Jean/Janet/Jane bit. I've seen those interchanged many times in Scottish records. I'm more worried that there is nothing after the baptism that shows William with a middle name. Not even the use of middle initial G. Date and place for the baptism fit and that is a large C so Cowan(s) is the only one I can find so far that fits.

I can't pick a William, Thomas or Jane in 1841 or 1851 as likely. William could have had any occupation before hotel keeper.

I have 7 credits left so do I get a copy of Grace's death certificate hoping it will have William G. Walker on it? I have two 'spare' credits because I already have the index record for Grace so I will look for a death for Jane.

Regards,

Dave

STOBBS, a village in the parishes of Borthwick and Temple, county Edinburgh, Scotland, 6 miles S. of Dalkeith. It is a station on the North British railway. It is situated on the river South Esk. The chief part of the inhabitants are employed in the gunpowder mills, erected in 1794.

12x Jane WALKER (other surname = COWAN) deaths after 1855 but none in Midlothian or Edinburgh City.

11x aged over 50 died before 2011.
4x aged over 50 died before 1900.

Could have died before 1855.

No Jane/Jean/Janet WALKER [other surname = COWAN(S)] deaths 1822-1854.

Yes, a death for Jane more logical/prudent :2fun:

The heat is certainly racking up in your neck of the woods, so to speak...

Wishing you all well.

That looks good, confirms the LDS (FS) entry for William G. And, a sibling too...

Geoff

Edit: Sibling for William, that is.

I looked for Jane born 1826 and no obvious one with family. Several in other households as servants.

I think we are stuck looking for William before the 1880 marriage.

Only one other lead we have not followed. He was a widower. Two curious ones - male WALKER and no mother listed:

Walker
Scotland, Births and Baptisms, 1564-1950
birth: 18 Mar 1840 Saint Cuthberts, Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland
christening: SAINT CUTHBERTS, EDINBURGH, MIDLOTHIAN, SCOTLAND

Walker

christening: SAINT CUTHBERTS, EDINBURGH, MIDLOTHIAN, SCOTLAND
death: 15 Jan 1851

parents: William Walker

No sign of a William G. and too many married William WALKERs in Midlothian looking at children baptised 1840-1851.

Yeah, but a fair old gap, with nothing concrete from birth to 1880 marriage!

Makes one wonder if on the right track

Geoff

At this point, I wouldn't recommend either, unless money is no object, there is a fair amount of conjecture.

You may not get any more than already found!
