Any ideas !!!!
I am totally stuck and dont know what else to do? I am looking for a Ernest Cecil Winter. Not sure of dob but probably in the late 1800 or early 1900s He was in the army but not sure what regiment. He was stationed at frome rd barracks in Trowbridge Wiltshire in 1940,where he was a corporal. He had a daughter-Shirley Annette Stevens on 15/02/41 He was married at this time, but dont know who too. In 1948 he worked on the railway, and lodged at 10 grey tree rd ross on wye. I have tried to trace his railway records but cant find them. I have put ads in local papers, and the hereford paper but heard nothing. I have wrote to loads of people called e winter, but nothing. A friend looked up his details on ancestry, and she said she couldnt find him. And i think im going mad!!!!! I thought Maybe he didnt exsist. But then i found his court order for paying money for his daughter till she was 16. Please has anyone any ideas as to what i can do. Maria

Hi meme1001,

You could try and look for a marriage around Frome, there are many marriage lists for Somerset you could look at. Many of the web sites with list stop around 1930. (FREEBMD).

Another option, if you are sure he lived in Ross on Wye, you could visit the local archives and look at the register books for voting. You really could do with an address or else you will have to labourisly go through all of them!!

Didn't the court order list his address? Maybe you could go to the local archive and search the court records?

All the best,

Gerry

Hi Maria

Do you have any idea when and where he died? That would give you his age at death.

Do you have any idea where he was born?

Is there anyone in the family who knew him? There is your interview all set up.

If he was a corporal in 1940, it is almost certain he was born in the early 20th century so, I would be thinking of consulting the St Catherine\'s House indexes of births, starting in 1920 and working backwards. You should find the record you want within about ten years of that. So, hazarding a guess, I would say his birth was most likely around 1910, give or take 5 years.

At this stage, I wouldn\'t even consider thinking about a pre 1900 birth.

Do you have records on all his children? When were they born and where? When was his oldest child born? Who was the mother? If you know any of that, you are likely looking for a marriage anytime from around the birth of the eldest child, going back for about five years. If you find that record, you can then check with the church they were married in. The register entry will also contain his age at the time of his wedding.

Give it a try and let us know how you get on.

Keith.

If you buy the daughters birth certificate you will get mothers name and maiden name as well as fathers also occupation and address for them. this will then enable you to begin somewhere.
