Could any kind person find a Jane Dixon in the 1841 Census? She was born abt 1824 in either W. Auckland or Hamsterley Co. Durham.

Thank you.

Hi RSJ,

There are 16 Jane Dixons in the county of Durham in 1841. This is with 5 years either side of 1824, as pob is not shown only born in or not born in county, so its hard to determine which one she is.

Back again - got a bit more information. I know that Jane Dixon was born at Hamsterley in Teesdale and I believe that she was an illegitimate child of a Margaret Dixon. There may be some siblings of Jane who are called John and Ann. Jane would be about 17.

Also I think that this Margaret Dixon was a daughter of a John and Margaret Dixon of Hamsterley also.

If anyone can look up these families in the 1841 census, I would be really grateful. Many thanks.

Hi the 1841 census doesn't give detail as to marriage etc., nor town of birth so is hard to pin down.
At 17 Jane may have been in service and not with her family.
I have found a baptism of a Margaret Dixon 10 May 1778 Hamsterley by Bishop Aukland to John Dixon and Margaret, not sure if it's your Margaret.

Do you know the years her sibblings were born ?

Hi, thank you for your interest in this. There are so many Dixons around the Hamsterley area its very difficult to get anything concrete on them.

I got the following from Durham Records office

Baptisms Dec. 10th 1820 Elizabeth illegitimate daughter of Margaret Dixon
July 4th 1824 Jane ditto - this IS the right year for my Jane
July 24th 1827 John
Jan 23 1831 Ann
ditto for the other 3. Illegitimate of Margaret Dixon etc.

Found this baptism Sept 15 1792 Margaret daughter of John and Margaret Dixon Hamsterley. Could be the Margaret / mother of the above?

Unfortunately got nothing to tie them together. I though perhaps if I could find them in the census it might give me a bit more to go on.

Many thanks.

Thanks Julie, sounds like them. Only thing, Jane married a Michael Longstaff in 1844, I sent for their marriage cert. it does not name Janes father but says that she was of full age? I suppose birth dates on census could be wrong?
The place is right though because the cert. says she is residing in Staindrop at the time of marriage. This has also been a problem because it states they married at Barnard Castle. Can't find them in either the Barnard Castle OR staindrop marriages.

Aaaagggghhhh!!!!!!!

I really appreciate the help that everyone has given me so far, thanks to you all.

Just had a thought! (Not very often it happens this late at night). I know that the Longstaffs were Quakers - can anyone tell me if Quakers married in church? - sorry I'm really ignorant about this.
