WW1 Medals

Hello all
Does anyone know if everyone who fought in WW1 was given medals?
I have my grandfather's medals (he was a stoker in the navy) but am assuming they were issued for being involved in any way rather than for any particular heroism.
I think these are the medals I have: 1914-15 Star, Victory medal and the British War medal (although this has the wrong ribbon).

Does anybody know or know how i can find out more about his service?
Thanks
Helen

Hello again GB

His name was Francis Wilcox
Service number: S.S. 111276
Rank: STO 1 R.N.

He was born 3.7.1891 in Wigan Hallgate

I'd be interested to know what his WW1 service involved, where he served etc. Any tips?

There were also family stories about him being a flyweight wrestling champion of the navy
Thanks
Helen

Another question:
What information do the National Archives hold?

I'd also like to see what I can find out about my Great Uncle William Bolton who died in Gallipoli in 1915 (18003, 1st Bn., Border Regiment).

The National Archives seem to have a medal card for him.
Would this tell me anything about how he died, in what battle etc?

Thanks again everyone
:)

William Bolton was in 1st Battalion Border Regiment, according to the Commonwealth War Graves website. The War Diary for this battalion is available from the National Archives - it will cost £3.36 to download. It's unlikely to mention him by name but will give a day by day account of what they were involved in.

Just put this reference WO 95/4311 into their Catalogue search http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/SearchUI/ and it will come up

It's also worth searching for his service record on the Ancestry website. However, lots were destroyed, so it may not have survived.

I think he's unlikely to be related as my relatives are poor smelly folk from the mines and mills of Lancashire.
No Australian connection that I've ever heard of.
But thanks for the suggestion Leefer.

Also thanks for the info re war diary.
I will look into that.

I have ordered Frank Wilcox's navy record.
He was in the navy from 1911-1919 so suspect it was his way out of aforementioned mine...

Thanks all
Helen
