WW1 record search help

Hello everyone
I have joined ancestry and have been looking for any info on my great grandfather, Robert Webster born Dec 1877 in Hull. I know that he enlisted in the Army in 1898, Lincolnshire Regiment, Reg no 4936. In 1914 he enlisted in the Lincolnshire Regiment again, Reg no A853, 8029, C638 (given on medal roll index card). There is a letter that was sent to say he was wounded in action by being shot in the shoulder and was discharged in 1917 as he was no longer physically fit. I am coming up with a total blank on finding any other records on ancestry in respect of his military career. I have also got info from a relative that he enlisted in the navy as a sailor in 1927 when he was 50 and was discharged in 1928. Any advice on getting the most out of searching records for him? Would love to find his service record, but finding nothing for him.

I have some military records i have been unable to find as well. This might explain what happened to some of the missing records.


Unfortunately, more than half of their service records were destroyed in September 1940, when a German bombing raid struck the War Office repository in Arnside Street, London. However, an estimated 2.8 million service records survived the bombing or were reconstructed from the records of the Glossary - opens new windowMinistry of Pensions. This means that there is a roughly 40% chance of finding the service record of a soldier who was discharged at some time between 1914 and 1920.

I just remembered something
One of mine didnt have military records on ancestry but i contacted the National Archives UK and was quoted £30 whether they found records or not.
I was lucky they did find records and sent me a copy BUT if they hadnt found any i would have gotten nothing for my money as the £30 would have been classed as a fee for them searching.

Sometimes contacting military museums can be helpful also and i have gotten little bits of info on ancestors this way from time to time.

Another member with more experience in the military might be able to advise you further.

Hello Abbie, do you know which Battalion robert webster was in ? if you do know which Battalion he was in this site will have some more information i.e which Brigade and Division he served in.

Thanks so much. Established from some papers a relative had given me that he was in the 1st Battalion, went to the link you posted and have been able to download a free book about what they did during the war.

Hi Abbie,
I've just enrolled on FHUK and saw your posting of several years ago.
Ancestry now has a lot more info than then so I may be telling you the blindingly obvious so here goes.

Your ancester was eligible for the Silver War Badge for his injuries and there is an entry for Robert Webster Reg No 8029. He enlisted on 13/8/1914 and was discharged as "sick" on 2nd Nov 1917. He served overseas and was a private. The discharge code is given as para 40 of King's Regulations but I'm not sure what this is and will need more research of KR to find a description. "Sick" may mean anything so I can't add any useful comments to expain this term.
