WW1 RN Ship Ratings?

On a Sailors service records (enclosed) i have it list' the ships he served on and then in brackets a word i can't make out, then under "Rating" 2 abbreviations, CMB which i think is "Coastal Motor Boat" and then CMM which i've no idea what it means.
Anyone able to interpret these? It's the one at the bottom Stephen Henry Excell.

The only reference I could find as to CMM was one that said it stood for Chief Motor Mechanic.
I could not find a reference to CMB.

Thanks ptjw7. I was taking it that "Rating" was refering to the ship and not the person?
Any ideas as to what the indecipherable word is next to the ship name?

It looks like "Trout"
A lot of his placements are shore bases :-

HMS Victory has been used at least sixteen times for various establishments. The WW1 uses were....

HMS Victory II - Crystal Palace - Training depot RN Divs 1914-19
HMS Victory III - Portsmouth Accounting Sec 1914-17
HMS Victory IV - London/Portsmouth/Petersfield RNR 1914-17
HMS Victory VI - Crystal Palace depot for RNR & RN Divs 1914-19
HMS Victory VII - Portland auxiliary patrol depot 1915
HMS Victory IX - Reserves Portsmouth 1915-16
HMS Victory X - Portsmouth accounting section 1917-19

All the above from the excellent 'Shore Establishments of the Royal Navy'


The last listed :-
HMS Venerable (1899) was a London-class pre-dreadnought battleship, a sub-class of the .... In February and March 1918 she was refitted there as a depot ship, and she moved to Portland on 27 March 1918 to serve as a depot ship for ...

So it looks like he was shore based.

Thank you Peter, very informative. 2 questions from this why "Accounting section" and why "Trout" what was the meaning of this?
