ww2 service records

hello, i am going to obtain my fathers ww2 service record. his name was john baxter, all i know is that he was in the royal engineers and served during the d-day landings. i have a photo of him in his uniform with the rank of corporal under the arc de triumphe . can you tell me what the service records will tell me? will there be unit names and were he served plus when and were he joined etc. also i wish to get my grandfathers service record. he was a skipper in the RNR and served on minesweepers until his death in 1943. what will his service record show. any help appriciated. regards, john

Hi John.

The amount of information in the records can vary quite a bit. There is no guarantee what will be in them. The service record may be stuffed full of info, or it may not exist at all.
Pieces of paper can vanish over time, so please be aware of that.

Hopefully, yours will be overflowing with information.:)
