I presume many of you have traced ancestry back to yeomen and even gentlemen? My Simons and Hempsons of Elmstead/Clacton in Essex were described as gentlemen in wills.

I think the Yate family of Burford in Oxfordshire, my ancestors were notable in the area. They were mentioned in the Visitation of Oxfordshire in about 1680.

Yes Benny, William Thomas was described as a Gentlemen in his will d 1822, pretty good for a Copper Roller from Wraysbury Buckinghamshire, not quite sure how he managed that though, all his chilren.
The Atkins family from Eton that his son into also were very well to do, but like Steve no nobility.
I have to say most of my ancestors had quite a good standard of living, most had their own businesses, there are a few exceptions :)

My gt gt grandfather gave his father's occupation as Gentleman on his marriage Cert. Research shows a different story. His father was, in fact, a servant!
