Thanks for the message. This is a tricky one isn't it? There are so many ways the name can be mispellt which doesn't help. I had a look on the 1841 census and the only William in Harwich is only 1 and his father isn't William. There 's 2 Willliam Henrys born in Essex but don't fit the age group and Father is a bell hanger. It is a big family in Harwich so it might be worth looking at any Waights in the area. It seems to be a common name locally in towns such as Colchester. Have you tried looking up the national archives to see if your mariner is listed there? I believe there is a mariners museum where there are seamens records for both navys but it's not searchable online. Looking up the pub history or the trade guides for the time might give you some info too.

Hi Simba,

Heres a couple of links, one to the Essex family history society which has a members interest of the name Waights Harwich and another Waights Dovercourt (unless its your posting) and a link to the Essex county council who have a section on family history.

This may be of interest, the National Archives Kew (Wills/documents online) have a William Watts otherwise Waights late Mariner belonging to his majestys ship Hyena and Goliath date 17th February 1791. This can be downloaded for a cost of £3.50.

You should recieve an email to confirm payment and it gives you a link to download your information from (if I remember rightly). Check your 'junk' folder in your email account and also make sure that your pop up blocker isnt on.

this should help.
