Hammond family.

Have just come across this thread, quite by accident. William Francis Hammonds grandfather was Henry Page Hammond of Godalming in Surrrey England. His sister Mary married Zachariah Skyring. William was apprenticed to their son William Henry Skyring in 1845 (He was also a Surveyor).
Daniel Skyring, brother of William Henry Skyring, was one of the earliest settlers in Brisbane and I wondered if there was any communication between them. Have not found anything as yet but am wondering if anyone out there has any information. Would love to hear if anyone has any information. Thanks in advance.

Hello and welcome to the Forum.

I have Hammond in my tree but not this one. I don't have Skyring in my tree.

Hi Dave,
I have noticed a few people have mentioned William Francis Hammond in their posts. I knew some of the family had moved to New Zealand but I had lost track of them. I am based in Brisbane but am mostly housebound so my information is from extensive internet searching.
Sorry I cannot help you with your Hammond family. My research is primarily Skyring based but the two families are quite intertwined with three marriages between them. Can get a little confusing.

Several posters to this topic so some may receive an alert and return to the forum.

William Hammond married Esther French in 1761 in Godalming, Surrey, England. They had 12 children that I know of.
Their son William married Nancy Skyring (nee Thornton) widow of John Skyring.
Their daughter Mary married Zachariah Skyring (this is my line).
Their daughter Ann married George Skyring but died shortly thereafter.
Through investigations of Wills and other documents it would seem that the families were in quite close contact.
What I am trying to find out is if there was any contact between the Hammond family that moved to Brisbane and then New Zealand with the Skyring family that were living in Brisbane. William Francis Hammond may have been told about the family in Australia but I am not sure of this. I am looking for some form of contact between the two families. If anyone has any ideas I would love to hear from them.

So glad I stumbled upon this thread as I am researching the Skyring tree for a friend of mine.
It appears that Mary Hammond married Zachariah in 1791 but I have also seen that he married Mary Ann Budd in 1795 but have no actual date or place or a burial for Mary Hammond. Do you have that? I was wondering if the children Mary Ann Skyring b 1793 and William Skyring bur 1795 were those of Mary Hammond or is the Mary Ann Budd part incorrect?? It seems very much copied from person to person on ancestry but there does not seem to be any actual proof in the records. Can you help me out with this please.

With regards to Mary Ann Budd, I have not been able to find out anything about her. The story I have often heard is that the name Budd was chosen by early researchers for Zac's wife because it was the middle name of their son Daniel. There are so many family "myths" some even involving Russian royalty.
The ties between the Hammond and Skyring families involve many generations. I know of several people who have tried to solve this mystery of Mary Ann Budd but no results as yet. This was one of the reasons I was looking for a connection between the two families in Brisbane to see if any of the descendants could offer a clue.
Fortunately each year new records are being released online and one day we may have a definitive answer to this puzzle.

I'm also trying to do a bit of research on the Skyring family. The only thing I know is that a John French Skyring, 1795 married Anne Trotter 7 June 1814 Lambeth, Surrey, England, United Kingdom. They had two children. Jane French Skyring and Anne Maria Skyring. I don't know what happened to Anne but Jane French Skyring immigrated to Canada with her father (and possibly sister) in 1833. She went on to marry my great great grandfather Capreol, and it seems John married a Susanna and had two children Harriet Frances in 1846 and William Henry in 1858. There is no contact between any of the family that I know of. https://bowergenealogy.ca/resources/methodist/Names S2.htm I have no knowledge of anyone prior to John but perhaps I'll learn some things here :D

William Skyring m Mary Tyzack in 1763
among their children was John, born 1769 and died 1793.
In 1788 he married Ann Thornton who as Nancy Skyring, widow, married William Hammond
John and Ann's son, John French Skyring, born 1791, married Ann Trotter 1789-1831.
The "French" name appears to come from the Hammond Family.
Baptism records him as being son of John & Nancy Skyring (the names Ann and Nancy seem to be interchangable)

In 1833 at the age of 43 John and his three children, John age 13, Jane age 17 and Ann age 16 sailed from London England for New York aboard the ship "Finance".
They arrived on 29.10.1833.
It was also in 1833 that his cousin Daniel Budd and his family sailed for Australia.

In 1851 John is listed on a census in Welland County, Ontario, West Canada as being born in 1796, with Amanda Skyring, born 1797 (presumably his wife).
He is a painter, they are both born in England and are Methodist.

John Jnr married Susanna Harrison but I remember a story about him leaving his family in Canada and reappearing in Ohio where he married Isabella Elliott and had a second family.
Jane as you know married your great great grandfather Capreol.
Anne Maria I have no information on.

Hope this is of some help.
Regards
Kristine

I live in NZ. I have a print of a beautiful survey map done by Horace Hammond, who as well as being a registered architect, was a licensed surveyor. I’m not sure how to post a screenshot or a scan of the survey map onto this site. It’s dated 1913. It’s of land that became my parents’ farm in 1965.
