I have a distant relative who served in WW1 & WW2 but ended up in 2 different services.
Ephraim McElvenny, B 1895, by WW1 was serving with the 9th Batt Highland Light Infantry and was awarded the DCM for "Conspicuous gallantry" and by 1917 was the CSM. It looks like he continued with the Batt and was still serving at the start of WW2. In 1940 he was promoted to 2nd Lt but in 1942 he "Relinquished his Commission" and transferred to the RAF Regiment as firstly a Prob Flt Lt and eventually confirmed in that rank. In 1943 he transfers again into the " Administrative and Special Duties Branch" which, apparently, were concerned mostly with secret agents and the resistance in occupied territories. I'm not sure but think he left at the end of the war.
I've not come across anyone before who transferred like this between 2 different services (Army/RAF) so wondered if this was normal or unusual?
