Seeking further information about John McKay, father of Hugh McKay – Scottish family

Hello,

I am researching my direct McKay family line and would appreciate help finding further information about my ancestor John McKay.

The evidence I have gathered supports the family line from John’s son, Hugh McKay, through the succeeding generations down to Martin McKay. I have therefore not arrived at John solely through an online family-tree hint; the later parent-to-child chain continues down to Martin and appears to be supported by the records I have found.

My present difficulty is discovering more about John himself. In particular, I would like to establish:

  1. When and where John McKay was born.
  2. Who his wife was and therefore the identity of Hugh McKay’s mother.
  3. Whether a baptism, marriage, burial, kirk-session or other contemporary record survives for John and his family.
  4. Whether John’s own parents can be identified.
  5. How he can be distinguished from other men named John McKay living in Scotland during the same period.
I would be interested in records under the spelling variants McKay, Mackay, MacKay and M’Kay.

I can provide the records and family-tree information showing the descent from Hugh down to Martin. I am particularly interested in original or independently indexed Scottish evidence rather than information copied from unsourced online trees.

Could anyone suggest which records I should examine next or help identify this particular John McKay?

Thank you very much for any assistance

Here is the information

Hello,

I am trying to find further information about my ancestor John McKay, a labourer, who was named as the father of Hugh McKay senior in a poor-relief application.

The family line I have established so far is:

John McKay, labourer
↓ father of
Hugh McKay senior, furnace worker, married Nancy McLaughlan
↓ father of
Hugh McKay junior, furnace worker, associated with Old Monkland, Lanarkshire, married a woman named McLean in approximately 1874
↓ father of
Martin McKay, born in 1882 and associated with Barrow-in-Furness, married Margaret McGlasson

Hugh McKay junior was approximately 24 when he married McLean, which would place his birth at roughly 1850. Martin’s birth in 1882 also fits reasonably within this family chronology.

The later generations provide a coherent coherentThomas? Wait no. Must be McKay. Need resume carefully. "provide continuing chain from Hugh Sr to Martin". I have a poor relief application naming John. But do we know exact location of application? no.

Questions:

  • further identify John: wife, b/d, residence, parents.
  • record confirms John+Hugh Sr beyond poor relief
  • Hugh Sr/Nancy marriage and children
  • any records for furnace workers in Old Monkland
  • distinguish same names.
Need perhaps include exact uncertainty: wife "McLean" first name unknown. But maybe user knows? just McLean. Say surname only known. "Old Monkland, Lanarkshire". Could be Lanark Old Monkland. Barrow-in-Furness.

Let's produce clean block from scratch, but accidentally inserted drafting in final analysis. Need final only.

Hi @rm1

I am also researching some McKay's from Hamilton/Lanarkshire, although none of the names you mention ring a bell in relation to my research unfortunately. What I can suggest from my own research is try searching for the surname McCoy in Ireland. Mine came from Armagh. If you have done Ancestry DNA, you can drop me a message and we can see if we pop up as matches.
