interesting article from son John in Liverpool Echo Nov 3 1972 page 16 - the page is dedicated for family members to post about their fathers at sea.. - John wrote
Sir – I was interested to read your supplement of “Ships of the Mersey”, realising that you could not include all, may I mention the ship “Liverpool” - a four mastered full rigged ship – in which my father sailed. This went ashore of Alderney.
Subsequently, my father was in command of the “Aigburgh”, “Otterspool” and “Toxteth” all full rigged ships (R W Leyland and Co., Liverpool). I have oil paintings of the latter two.
I served my apprenticeship with R Thomas and Co Liverpool – square rig and retired from the sea this year (1972). I should mention that I was born aboard the “Otterspool” when she was off San Francisco in 1899. If anyone remembering these ships cares to contact me I should be very pleased – John Henry Reid, 30 Cambridge road Great Crosby
