The iron ship Aigburth, 1838 tons. 1882 R. Williamson & Sons, Workington. Owners: Sailing Ship Aigburth Ltd (RW Leyland) reg. Liverpool. Aigburth is the name of a suburb of Liverpool, England.

1882 October Launched at the shipyard of R. Williamson & Son, Workington, for Sailing Ship Aigburth Co. Ltd. (R.W. Leyland & Co.), Liverpool. Assigned the official British Reg. No. 86222 and signal WMKR.

1901 November Stranded on the South Arklow Bank in the Irish sea while under command of Captain John Henry Reid late of the same owner's ship Otterspool. Captain Reid was afterwards suspended three months for the stranding.

1904 August 2 Wrecked on a previously unchartered coral reef off Rook Island, New Guinea, on voyage from Newcastle, NSW, to Sourabaya, Java, under command of Captain John Reid. The crew left the ship in four boats and were all able to reach safety except for on of the boats with the second mate and seven men.

The crew of Aigburth abandoned the ship in four boats, three of which were quickly picked up. The fourth boat also survived. Commanded by second mate G. Patterson, and with seven others aboard, landed on Rook Island (presently Umboi Island) and the crew made contact with some natives, who took them to a Chinese trader on another island, and then eventually to Friedrich Wilhelm Haven (presently Madang). They were taken to the steamer Prinz Sigismund, arriving Brisbane on the 20th October. The Inquiry into the wreck had already been held in Sydney, the loss being ascribed to the negligence of the master, who had not taken adequate notice of the strong current in the area where the vessel was wrecked.

John had his certificate suspended for 3 months back in 23 Jan 1902 – cert no: 035823 but was granted a chief mate’s cert for period of suspention

This is amazing, thank you so so much for your input. This has opened up so much info and is helping put it all together and bringing it all to life.
I can not thank you enough for your help,

Research Update – The Reid postcard story is really starting to come together.

Firstly, I'd like to say a huge thank you to everyone who has taken the time to search newspapers, census returns, shipping records and family history records. Every one of your contributions has added another piece to the puzzle, and over the last few days we've made more progress than I ever imagined.

When I first bought this collection 12 years ago they were simply postcards from different parts of the world. Thanks to everyone's help on here, they're now becoming the documented story of Captain John Henry Reid, his wife Emma, their son Jack, and the wider Hughes and Crosbie families.

Here's where the evidence now takes us.

  • 1902 – We now have the official Board of Trade Inquiry into the grounding of the sailing ship Aigburth, confirming Captain John Henry Reid, Master's Certificate No. 035823, received a three-month suspension.
  • 2 August 1904 – The Aigburth is wrecked on a reef off Rook Island, New Guinea. Contemporary reports tell the remarkable story of the crew's survival and eventual rescue.
  • 7 December 1906 – A contemporary newspaper places John and Emma Reid in Tenterfield, New South Wales, where around 250 townspeople gathered to welcome them home after both had recovered from serious illness.
  • The Australian postcards now fit beautifully into that period. We have cards from Tenterfield, Newcastle, New South Wales, and Woolwich, New South Wales, allowing us to follow the family's movements before they left Australian waters.
  • Christmas Day 1906 – One of our postcards was posted from Woolwich, New South Wales, sending Christmas greetings all the way back to 5 Lenthall Street, Liverpool.
  • 18 January 1907Postcards 4 and 5 place the family in Iquique, Chile, with messages from Jack, Emma and Jenny. Seeing those names alongside the records you've all found suddenly gives the postcards a completely different meaning.
  • The collection then continues through the great merchant shipping routes of the Edwardian world, taking us through Port Said, the Suez Canal, the Far East, Japan, and eventually back towards Britain.
  • 17 April 1907Postcard 49, posted from Liverpool, contains the message, "There was a mistake in the name of the ship. No news yet of the Toxteth." Knowing the story we've uncovered together, it's a message that really makes you stop and think.
  • 10 May 1907 – One of the biggest breakthroughs has come from the research carried out by members of this forum. Together we've tracked down the original National Archives BT334 Deaths at Sea Register, which records that Captain John Henry Reid, born in Douglas, Isle of Man, died at Stuyvenberg Hospital, Antwerp, whilst serving as Master of the Toxteth. Being able to put that official document alongside the postcards, newspapers and shipping records is a real milestone for the project, and it's entirely thanks to the time and effort people here have freely given and i sincerly thank you all for this. Its quite a task compiling these postcards and this new information helping me piece it all together has put new wind into my sails so to speak
The family itself is becoming much clearer too. Thanks to the genealogy research, we're now identifying Emma Reid (née Hughes), the Hughes family, Joseph and Annie Crosbie, Margaret Emma Crosbie, and understanding why those names begin appearing throughout the later postcards. They are no longer just names written on old cards – they're real people whose lives we can now begin to reconstruct.

What amazes me most is how everything is beginning to support everything else. The postcards, newspapers, census returns, Board of Trade records, probate entries, shipping records and family history research are no longer separate pieces of information.
Together they're telling the story of one Edwardian merchant mariner and his family as they travelled across Australia, crossed the Pacific to Chile, passed through the great sea routes of Suez and the Far East, and eventually returned towards home.

There is still plenty of work to do, and I'm sure there are more records waiting to be found.
If anyone would like to continue helping us, whether by finding birth, baptism, marriage, census, probate, shipping, crew agreement, Board of Trade, hospital or newspaper records, or simply by sharing ideas and observations, I’d be incredibly grateful. If anyone wishes to help and gather documentations happy to cover costs that is for a private conversion if the forum rules allow that here ?
Every record that's been found so far has helped bring another part of this family's story back into the light.

What started as a box of old postcards has become something far bigger than I ever expected. It's become a genuine collaborative piece of historical detective work, and every one of you has played a part in bringing these people back to life. Thank you all, and let's see where the next discovery takes us.

I’m trying to upload a few pics of relevant cards mentioned especially card 49. However it’s saying pic's/ file too large ? It’s just a pic taken from my phone . Not sure as why or how to get around this ?

Card 49 : April 07 - Ship toxteth is mentioned

Transcription
W.R. sent to Kirkdale.
Sorry to say there was a mistake in the name of the ship.
No news yet of the “Toxteth”.
I was disappointed.
Am going to see Edith this afternoon.
She is in bed with a bad throat.
Hope you are all right.
Love from Jack & E.R.

From what we’ve recovered and discussed so far, I do not have a confirmed death record for Emma Reid (née Hughes).

What we do have is:

  • ✅ Emma Hughes married John Henry Reid on 2 April 1894.
  • ✅ She was in Australia with John in 1906 (Tenterfield newspaper).
  • ✅ She was widowed on 10 May 1907 when John died in Antwerp.
  • ✅ She appears throughout the later postcard correspondence with Jack and the Hughes/Crosbie family.
we had forum research suggesting a possible death for Ellen Reid (John’s mother), but not Emma.

So Emma Reid’s death should remain on the outstanding research list until we find documentary evidence. Given her age and the family links we’ve established, she’s now one of the key people to trace after 1907.

Sir – I was interested to read your supplement of “Ships of the Mersey”, realising that you could not include all, may I mention the ship “Liverpool” - a four mastered full rigged ship – in which my father sailed. This went ashore of Alderney.
Subsequently, my father was in command of the “Aigburgh”, “Otterspool” and “Toxteth” all full rigged ships (R W Leyland and Co., Liverpool). I have oil paintings of the latter two.

I served my apprenticeship with R Thomas and Co Liverpool – square rig and retired from the sea this year (1972). I should mention that I was born aboard the “Otterspool” when she was off San Francisco in 1899. If anyone remembering these ships cares to contact me I should be very pleased – John Henry Reid, 30 Cambridge road Great Crosby
